Learning Never Really Ends

Learning Never Really Ends

Like a lot of business owners, I started out initially learning a trade, and as time went by I found myself running a growing SME.

I didn’t take the traditional academic route.  I came into the industry through the electrical trade after qualifying as an electrician from Kevin Street.  After that, my learning was very much all on-site, solving real problems, and taking on responsibility early. You could say my real education came from experience, from the people around me, and from doing the work day in, day out.

That path taught me something important: while education isn’t one-size-fits-all, learning is universal.  Building the business from 1996 onwards was learning in its purest form. As the company grew, so did the demands - managing people, understanding clients and different sectors, adapting to innovative technologies, regulations and surviving (or thriving) during challenging times.

Over time, my own learning evolved too - from technical skills to leadership, and from leadership into strategic thinking. As a business, we’ve always reflected that mindset - investing in our people, supporting career progression, and making training a core part of how we operate.

A Generational Shift

Looking at the next generation - even in my own family - I can see how things have changed.  But what’s interesting is that while the paths are different, the destination is the same: growth, capability, and opportunity.

The real twist?  I’ve just started at third level education for the first time myself.

I’ve been part of the Enterprise Ireland “Dynamic Leadership: Roadmap to Growth” programme, delivered with DCU. It’s been an opportunity to step back, challenge assumptions, and continue developing as a leader.  In many ways, the journey has come full circle: from apprentice to business owner to student again.

Experience doesn’t replace learning.  it actually deepens the need for it.

Learning Never Really Ends

The Myth of “Being Finished”

There’s a common belief in business that at some point, you’re “done learning.”  The reality is the opposite.

The more experience you gain, the more you realise what you don’t know. Leadership brings new challenges, new perspectives, and a constant need to adapt. In today’s environment, learning isn’t optional - it’s a competitive advantage. Businesses that stand still fall behind. Those that invest in learning make better decisions, innovate more effectively and build stronger, more capable teams.

That’s why we place such importance on creating a culture of learning across the entire company whether it’s our apprentices starting their careers, experienced team members continuing to develop or leadership staying open to new perspectives.   In short, when learning becomes part of the culture - not just a once-off event - you build a stronger, more resilient organisation.

Final Thoughts

There’s no single “correct” path.  Whether it’s an apprenticeship or a university degree, each route has value. What matters is the willingness to keep going.

Because the truth is your path won’t be linear, you’re never “finished” and you can start, stop, and restart at any stage.  The real constant is curiosity, adaptability, and the willingness to evolve.

The biggest irony of all is that the generation that didn’t go to college is now choosing to return to it - this time by choice, not necessity.  After 30 years, one thing is clear - learning never really ends - it just changes form.  Whether it’s on-site, in a classroom, or in a boardroom, growth doesn’t stop.
